Guidelines for contributing a story

RealTalk aims to share honest stories in a responsible and respectful way, but we can’t accept submissions that don’t reflect that. These guidelines are here to help make that possible. If you are sharing your story, we need you to feel safe.

You should also be able to share a story without it being rude or attacking someone else's experience or beliefs.

Make sure to abide by the general guidelines below before submitting your story:

  • Think about the privacy of loved ones, friends, and strangers mentioned in your story. Be respectful when sharing details of others’ lives.

  • Tell your story from your perspective. Try not to make assumptions about how others in your story are feeling or thinking.

  • Please avoid suggesting that another person’s circumstances are better or worse than your own

  • Use respectful language. If your post is critical, which it can be, it should also be constructive.

  • Think about this question: “What is the purpose of my post?” This can have multiple answers: to share something you’ve learned, to let others know they’re not alone, etc.

  • Do not disclose intimate, graphic, or potentially embarrassing details about someone you care for

  • Do not use words that have historically demeaned people

As a gentle reminder, we edit the stories and titles for length, clarity, and according to our own editorial guidelines. This might mean your title will be changed or certain language will be removed.
